The locality

Our farm is in the foothills of the Welsh Black Mountains. The surrounding area has a rich history going back to pre-Roman times and visitors can discover many inspiring historical sites.

The nearest towns are the cathedral city of Hereford, Abergavenny, Monmouth and Ross-on-Wye. The little Welsh town of Hay-on-Wye – famous for its books and literary festival – lies north-west of us.

A rich history, an ancient beauty

Offa the Great, King of Mercia built a great wall – Offa's Dyke in 779, from Chester to the Wye. If any Welshman was found east of this, his right hand was cut off.

Being a frontier county on the Welsh Marches has left many inspiring, fortified remains such as Goodrich, Clifford, Wilton and Grosmont Castles.

Local tranquillity

Some nearby places to visit: St David's Church next door; Dore Abbey – founded by Cistercian monks in 1174; the Abbey Dore Court gardens cafe has wonderful cakes; the ruined Llanthony Abbey sits nestled in the Black Mountains near footpaths and has a bar and restaurant in the cellar. Galanthus Gallery has local art shows and a fine cafe too.
